Status and conditions at swb.de

Preface:
The domain swb.de is a member of the IN e.V. and thus can only connect individuals for non-commercial usage and purposes.

Costs

(Dynamic IP addresses cost DM 5 less, so a PPP dial-up using dynamic IP addresses would cost DM 25/month.)

And yes, all of this is flat rate, no further time or volume fees exist. Of course until German Telekom (or any other local TelCo) will provide flat rates for local calls you still have to pay their charges as well.
The first month is for testing purposes and free of charge. Alas if you don't send in a completed SWB-Antrag (connection request form) and decide to join up (by paying your initial fees for example ;-) within the first three weeks after your account has been created your site will be disconnected.

Network infrastructure

Since January, 2000:

SWB Server located at the TUD (local university in Darmstadt).
A Livingston Portmaster 3 for dialup IP users, connected to a S2M (primary ISDN) line. It features 30 ISDN channels (PPP), of which 10 can also be used for V.34bis and V.90/K56flex modem connects (CSLIP and PPP).

This setup allows for a large number of UUCP users and about 100 IP users, a busy line is very unlikely (3 users per port vs. about 20 with big commercial ISPs, so far the peak usage was 50% of the port capacity and average usage 30%). I'm interested in good service and not the lowest possible prices.

Services

I try to supply the best possible technical availibility and looking back over several years I'm happy to report that local errors were very seldom and usually fixed quickly. However there's very little I can do when the whole german academic network is cut off from the rest of the net by the whims of a burned out router or drunken construction worker severing the cables. ;-) In addition to the services listed above users (including UUCP only) have the ability to maintain a homepage on www.swb.de. There's also an optional central junk email (UCE/UBE/spam) filter.

Usage conditions

As stated in the SWB-Antrag the topmost premise is the non-commercial usage of the account. The application is so short since it includes a (bi-directional) unconditional termination clause which cuts very effectivly through all the legal red tape. On the other hand I had to use this only once in over 7 years of service...
